Message from Board of Education

The DeKalb County Board of Education is seeking a new superintendent for the DeKalb County School System.  This is one of the Board’s most important responsibilities and the Board has decided to conduct a national search for DeKalb’s new leader.

On Friday, November 19, 2010, after a widely advertised, formal solicitation process and interviews with finalist firms, The DeKalb County Board of Education approved Ray & Associates, Inc. to conduct a nationwide search for a new superintendent for the DeKalb County School System.

In an effort to maintain transparency and to a give voice to DeKalb County citizens, DeKalb County School System parents and staff as well as strategic DeKalb County stakeholders, Ray & Associates, Inc. held a series of public community forums, small group meetings and individual interviews.  These meetings were advertised in local print and television media, the DeKalb County School System public website and internal email announcements.  A link was provided on the DeKalb County School System website to receive input from those unable to attend meetings in person.

Ray & Associates, Inc. accumulated all input received from the public community forums and other meetings as well as responses to the website link and presented the results to The DeKalb County Board of Education on Friday, December 17, 2010.  During this same meeting The DeKalb County Board of Education approved Ray & Associates, Inc. to immediately begin advertising and active recruiting for a new superintendent for the DeKalb County School System.

Applications and related materials will be received from interested parties by Ray & Associates, Inc. until the position is filled.  After an extensive review of applications from interested parties, Ray & Associates, Inc. will forward actual candidates to The DeKalb county Board of Education for consideration and possible interview.

RFP 11-26 distributed through the Georgia Procurement Registry (142 total distributions)

August 19, 2010:

Initial Notification sent to 14 vendors from the DCSS Vendor Registry

August 24, 2010:

Initial Notification sent to 7 vendors as provided by Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan
Initial Notification sent to 3 Superintendent Search Firm Trade Organizations (AASA and NSBA)
Initial Notification sent to target sector vendors and Georgia Department of Education


Additional constant contact made via email correspondence to all vendors at key milestones of the procurement process:

  • Initial announcement

  • Invitation to pre-proposal conference

  • Pre-proposal conference summary and pointer to website for questions with answers

  • Reminder of proposal due date

  • Invitation to public proposal opening


Board of Education Selections for Interviews

Friday, October 8, the Board of Education selected two of the four firms for interviews. Those two firms are GSBA and Ray & Associates. Both firms were interviewed in a public meeting held on Friday, October 15, 2010. The Board is expected to meet again on Friday, October 22, 2010 to take an official vote to select the search firm.

Board of Education Selection for Search Firm

On Friday, October 22, 2010, the Board of Education voted to select Ray & Associates as the Superintendent search firm.


DeKalb County School System Superintendent Search Community Meetings

The DeKalb County School System hosted two Community Meetings in December regarding the DeKalb County Board of Education Superintendent Search Process. The public was invited to attend both meetings.

The Community Meetings were held at the following locations:

• Peachtree Middle School at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 7, 2010

• Columbia High School at 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 9, 2010

The Board of Education is seeking a permanent superintendent for the DeKalb County School System. This is one of the Board’s most important responsibilities, and the Board is conducting a national search for a leader for DeKalb Schools.

The Board of Education is committed to making the Superintendent Search Process open and transparent, and its search will include Community Meetings and open Board meetings for public discussion. Members of the public are encouraged to participate in this important decision for our schools

Public Forum with Permanent Superintendent Search Candidates

The DeKalb County School System hosted a public forum with three candidates for permanent superintendent of DeKalb Schools on Thursday, March 31, at 6 p.m. at the Administration and Instructional Complex Auditorium at 1701 Mountain Industrial Blvd., Stone Mountain, GA, 30083.  Parents and members of the community were invited to submit written questions of the candidates.


Superintendent Finalist Named

The DeKalb Board of Education is pleased to announce the selection of a finalist for superintendent of the school district, Cheryl L. H. Atkinson, Ed. D. The board will formally install the new superintendent in a public vote following a 14-day waiting period consistent with state law. Dekalb Board of Education Ratifies Employment Contract

The DeKalb Board of Education officially ratified the contract of superintendent finalist Cheryl L. H. Atkinson, Ed. D.  According to the terms of the contract, Dr. Atkinson will begin her service as DeKalb County School District Superintendent on September 15, 2011. | Press Release
